Above you will find the podcast recordings for "The Church & Affordable Housing Conference 2008". Many of these workshops and plenary sessions are well worth listening to, informative, encouraging, educational and very emotionally moving.

On Friday Night, Deputy Mayor Tim Stevonson starts the conference off with a very direct message for all the participants, stirring us to action and to make our voices heard. David Collins gives us a good theological foundation for why the church needs to invest in affordable housing.

Saturday morning starts with many great workshops some which I found good were: Adequate Income: Stats, Stories and Solutions talking about living wage campaigns, a real part of the total poverty reduction strategy. Dr Mary Nelson stirs us about assets that we do have and helps us to have a constructive perspective that brings dignity to all in her talk about Principles of Christian Community development. VanCity shares with us some of their creative experience in developing affordable housing in there talk on Financing Affordable Housing Developments.

On Saturday afternoon in the plenary session, Judy Graves gives us a very direct talk about What is the cause of homelessness in the afternoon plenary talk. We hear a moving Testimony from Ross on Housing Issues for people with mental health issues. Dr Mary Nelson gives us another great talk on Affordable Housing - Front Door to Christian Community Development. The afternoon workshops again give us many more great talks, but Judy graves gives an amazing talk on What Works to Permanently House the Chronically Homeless?

There were several workshops over the day that gave us detailed views into different needs within the larger housing crisis in Vancouver. James Grunau gives us a really good overview, and the struggles with many moving stories of the local refugees in light of the housing crisis in Vancouver in his talk Gods Heart for Refugees Includes Housing. Lorrie Wasyliw gives us a clear understanding of what domestic violence is and what is looks like today in Vancouver in her talk God Speaks Against Domestic Violence. In the afternoon, Jenny Shantz shares her experience with the crisis needs of homeless youth in Vancouver in her talk Supporting Youth in Crisis to Achieve Healthy Adulthood.

Saturday night we have our last plenary session for the conference. Louise Alber gives us a short testimony about the frightening experience that a new refugee to Canada can have in his testimony Experiences with finding Housing from a Refugee. After this Michael Brown describes what Community Land Trusts are and how this can address some of the needs in the continuum for providing affordable housing in his talk Faith-based Roots of the Community Land Trust Movement.
