Praying To Follow The Light Today

  I know it is the middle of summer but as I was reading a meditation this morning I was reminded of winter snow storms in Ontario. Nothing is harder than trying to drive in a blinding snowstorm in the dark. One of the most helpful things to find is a vehicle ahead of you whose lights you can follow when you can’t see the lines on the road or even where the edge of the road is. It’s even better if it’s the snow plow.

Jesus told us:

I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life. John 8:12

And he was echoing words centuries earlier that were telling us about God:

For you are the fountain of life, the light by which we see. Psalms 36:9

And words about Himself as God revealed Him to His followers:

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.  John 1:4-5

God not only wants to be light for us and show us a safe and clear way forward but  invites us today to

shine light in such a way that others who are walking in the dark can see their way in the light as well.

God comes to live in us, changes us so there is a noticeable and attractive difference about our lives to others around us, and then helps us to be a faithful witness to His goodness.

For God who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the one who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ. 2 Corinthians 4:6

If you’ve been around as long as I have you might remember this wonderful old hymn:

Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me,

All his wonderful passion and purity,

O thou Spirit divine, all my nature refine,

Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.

That’s my prayer today and that’s what we will pray together to see come alive in all of us more and more.

We are so grateful that You, God, are light in us and in our dark world. We have all lived our own version of struggles in the darkness. We are very thankful that you shone the light of your love into our lives, helped us walk forward safely, and every day are showing us beauty around us and in us that we did not know was there.

You are that beauty and as You live in us, You make our lives beautiful as well.Lord, may we see your light, bear your light, and shine your light in our dark world today. We long for suffering people to see you. Live in us as we walk today’s path. Help us to brighten this part of your world by reflecting who you are.

Let your light shine before others so that they may see your good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. Matthew 5:16
