Calling Out To God
Calling Out To God
Calling someone on the phone used to be one of the main ways we stayed in touch. I remember telephone styles that we used in our home that I won’t even admit to now because they now seem to belong to a more “historical time.”Enter the handheld cell phone not that many years ago. Well, there were the “bricks” that were the first ones but it was really in the early 2000’s that small hand held – what we refer to now as cell phones became popular with the most famous introduction in 2007 of the first iPhone.
Now we text and email and message on various social platforms when we want to put the call out to announce something or ask for information.
Even the government has moved that way with their emergency alerts. Driving in the car a week or so ago and off went that clanging sound that is unique to the provincial emergency message – a test that required no further action.
When I needed to confirm a medical appointment a text message came and my response was to type in some numbers.
I was thinking about this calling others when I read some verses in the Bible about calling out to God.
I have a colleague who is regularly encouraging people to message to “5015.” What’s that all about? It’s a reference to Psalm 50:15 – a wonderful promise from God.
Call upon me in the day of trouble and I shall rescue you and you will honour me.
Psalm 50:15
I don’t think God cares if it is a thought, a whisper, a shout, a groan, a sigh – anything that asks God to come and be with us and act on our behalf. He’s so generous and so willing when we come to Him in trust and faith.
The Lord is close to all who call on Him.
Psalm 145:18
Thank You God that you are close to us and that when we call out to You, You are willing to come and help us. It’s hard to face our problems alone, and we all surely have troubles more often than not, but just to know that we aren’t facing them alone and even better, are facing them with You, the all powerful God of unfailing and generous love close beside us – that’s a good deal.
So today, God, we want to message 5015 – and quickly call on you whenever we bump into trouble. Thank You for Your reliable promise to rescue us. We will give speak in honour of Your goodness to all we meet. Amen
Well, when you pick up your phone for the 25th time today to check your messages or your social media, remember that God is ready to act on that quick word You send His way. It’s actually a great way to respond to all the news we get there don’t you think?
