Audio for THE LOVE THAT HOLDS OUR YEAR TOGETHER
Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:5-8 NKJV)
I was reflecting on what we should end the year's meditations on. Through my head over and over again was the sound of an old gospel song that I was taught when I was a child. The particular version I was "hearing" is a recording I made on my phone from an internet broadcast of an old pastor who is quite ill with cancer, potentially nearing the end of more than 6 decades of faithful service to the God He loves. His voice quavers a bit as he leads the congregation but his knowledge of the love of God is strong. From his early life as an orphan to these waning years as a well-known church leader, he has found God's love a faithful support and guide for his daily living and in every situation he's faced.
I haven't lived as long and I haven't faced the same challenges, but I know the love of God that has been solid and satisfying for several decades. That love turned me around from a whining depressed person to one of energy, peace of mind, and joy. I cannot recommend anything greater to you, as we come to the end this year and head into the new year, than to come to the knowledge of this love of God. There's nothing stronger or truer. There's nothing better, nothing more dependable. Receive this love. Depend on this love. Build your life on this love. You will never be disappointed.
The Love of God
1. The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell.
It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell.
The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win; His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.
Chorus:
O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure, the saints' and angels' song.
2. Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made;
Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole, though stretched from sky to sky.
