Heart Transplant … How Does It Work?

We are thinking these days about the heart transplant that we need in order to find the life that we long for. We know we can’t do it on our own. We know God is standing ready to exchange our hardened, stubborn, and broken heart for a new one that is soft and tender and responsive.

Will it sometimes feel like He’s “killing us” during the transplanting process? It will because He is. The change this step invites us to is that dramatic. Who can live through this step then? How does it work? As we respond to God’s gracious provision of forgiveness and restoration, God transplants a new heart into us and fills us with His Spirit so we can make decisions that follow His plan. This new heart is His gift to those who believe in the work of Jesus on their behalf – His dying on the cross for all wrongs done to us and all wrongs done by us.
Even though Jesus was God’s Son, he learned obedience from the things he suffered. In this way, God qualified him as a perfect High Priest, and he became the source of eternal salvation for all those who obey him. (Hebrews 5:8-9 NLT)

God invites us to first enter into a deep experience of His love given freely and personally to each of us. We can only give ourselves over so completely when we are in an environment of care and love because that’s the only place where we are safe and secure. Only in loving security can we even begin to consider opening ourselves to something truly life changing. As we choose to trust God’s goodness and make healthy choices, often in spite of our feelings, we will begin to experience satisfying change and a richer life than anything we’ve previously known.
