Tuesday, April 23, 2013 -- Bright Lights

Tuesday April 23, 2013

As part of energy conservation we are being introduced to new light bulbs for our homes.  I have to confess, I don't like them very much.  They may save energy but they don't seem to give the brightness of light that makes reading and doing other activities easy.  There's a dullness that makes me want to "turn up the light" only to find that the light is shining to its fullest. The darkness seems to have more power than those lights.  They seem feeble and appear to be somewhat "overtaken” by that darkness.

I'm grateful that in God's kingdom we have a light that burns brightly and completely overcomes the darkness. That light is Jesus Christ.  Jesus is full of light and Jesus came to our dark world to show us the way to a life that is free and safe and filled with hope.

Jesus spoke to the people once more and said, “I am the light of the world. If you follow me, you won’t have to walk in darkness, because you will have the light that leads to life.”  (John 8:12 NLT)

God created everything through him, and nothing was created except through him. The Word gave life to everything that was created, and his life brought light to everyone. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it.  (John 1:3-5 NLT)

We see many dark deeds going on around us.  Just read the newspapers or watch the news on any given night and it seems that there's horrific and more widespread dark deeds going on than ever before.  Also, for whatever reason, we may sometimes experience dullness, or even darkness, in our own thinking or emotions.  I find it helpful to know that even though our world sometimes seems dark, that with the light of Christ in us, the darkness will never overtake us.  Jesus’ promise to us is that the darkness can never extinguish His light in us.  Nothing can separate us from the light of God's love.
Whether you experience darkness within your own soul or simply see the darkness in circumstances around you, it's time to follow Jesus.  He’s the light of the world so you will never stumble but rather find light that leads to life.
