Tuesday, April 30, 2013 --whose Fault Is It?

As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man who had been blind from birth. “Rabbi,” his disciples asked him, “why was this man born blind? Was it because of his own sins or his parents’ sins?”

“It was not because of his sins or his parents’ sins,” Jesus answered. “This happened so the power of God could be seen in him.  We must quickly carry out the tasks assigned us by the one who sent us. The night is coming, and then no one can work.  But while I am here in the world, I am the light of the world.”

Then he spit on the ground, made mud with the saliva, and spread the mud over the blind man’s eyes.  He told him, “Go wash yourself in the pool of Siloam” (Siloam means “sent”). So the man went and washed and came back seeing!  … “But I know this: I was blind, and now I can see!”  (John 9:1-7, 25 NLT)

We have many questions about difficulties in our lives, whether they are tragedy, addiction, sickness or poverty.  We often look for reasons to blame others or to explain a particular situation or set of circumstances.  Sometimes, we do suffer painful consequences for poor choices.  At other times we are faced with the painful results of the unjust actions of others.  However, there are many circumstances we face that are outside our understanding or our control, but not outside God’s knowledge and care.

While the particular reasons behind some of the difficulties in our lives is a mystery to us, God’s desire to use the circumstances for His glory and our good is clear.  God wants to give us power and
encouragement to face what comes our way.  God wants to reveal to us how good and kind He is as He accompanies us during difficult times and brings power and healing to us.

We always want God to take suffering away whenever we ask.  Sometimes, the problem is miraculously removed.  Many other times, God gives us strength to face a hard time and teaches us gentle lessons that we forever carry deep within our souls.

The good news is that regardless of the reasons for our suffering, Jesus has the power to help us deal with it.  He wants us to see His goodness and experience His ever present help in times of trouble.
