Faithfulness (2) True To Your Word

Tuesday September 10, 2013

Many claim to have unfailing love, but a faithful person who can find? Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled. (Proverbs 20:6; Joshua 21:45 NIV)

Are you true to the words you speak?  Do people trust what you say?  Do you always do what you say you will do?  Are you trustworthy to fulfill your promises?  When God makes a promise He can be relied on to fulfill His promise.

The Bible records many promises that God has made to His people and His faithfulness to fulfill His promises.  When we make promises to God, our spouse, our children, other loved ones, friends and acquaintances, we usually mean to keep them.  However, unseen circumstances may arise and we find ourselves in situations which conflict with the promises we have made.  What do we do when this happens?  Will we honour the promises we have made?

As surely as God is faithful, our word to you does not waver between “Yes” and “No.”  For Jesus Christ, the Son of God, does not waver between “Yes” and “No.” He is the one whom Silas, Timothy, and I preached to you, and as God’s ultimate “Yes,” he always does what he says.  For all of God’s promises have been fulfilled in Christ with a resounding “Yes!” And through Christ, our “Amen” (which means “Yes”) ascends to God for his glory.  (2 Corinthians 1:18-20 NLT)

Before making a promise it is best to reflect on the implications of doing so.  Promises should not be made lightly but only with every intention of fulfilling them.  Broken promises have caused a lot of heartache for people.  The integrity of the promise maker also suffers when a promise is broken and may leave that person with feelings of guilt and poor self-image. God knows how broken promises cause heartache and His word encourages us to be people of integrity, fulfilling what we have promised.

People with integrity walk safely, but those who follow crooked paths will slip and fall. (Proverbs 10:9 NLT)

A dollar bill is only as good as the government or bank that has promised to give value to the holder of the bill.  The piece of paper itself is of little value but the issuer or backer of the bill is what makes it valuable.  Some countries have had their currency devalued because their government, and/or their banks are suspect in being able to fulfill the promises written on the country’s monetary bills.  However, the word of God, as recorded in the Bible, is faithful through all generations to fulfill what He has promised.

I bow before your holy Temple as I worship.  I praise your name for your unfailing love and faithfulness; for your promises are backed by all the honor of your name.  (Psalm 138:2 NLT)

Has your word been devalued in any way by your failure to keep your promises?  God is faithful; if you confess your sins He will forgive you and help you to be faithful from this point onwards.

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9 NIV)
