Faithfulness (5) A Faithful Witness

Friday September 13, 2013

When we read the Bible we are exposed to faithful witnesses of how God has worked to save His people from the sin that so easily overwhelms them.   From Genesis to Revelation writers of the Bible have faithfully penned the history of God’s chosen people.  Through Jesus, the Jews, the children of Abraham, and all other nations have become one, grafted together by the work of Jesus on the cross.  All God’s promises that apply to the children of Abraham are inherited by those who have trusted in Christ and who now have the right to be called children of God.

“Branches were broken off so that I could be grafted in.”  Granted.  But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but trembleSee what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (Romans 11:19-20; 1 John 3:1 NIV)

After His resurrection and before Jesus returned to heaven to sit at the right hand of His father He gave this instruction to His friends.

He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.  Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. (Mark 16:15-16 NIV)

The disciples, the apostle Paul, and those who believed in Jesus through their words, spread the Good News of redemption through Christ wherever they went.  When we read in the book of Acts how the Holy Spirit turned fearful people into bold preachers and martyrs for the good news of the cross of Christ, we are amazed by what happened.  Peter, who once denied Jesus, turned into one of the most faithful witnesses for the work of Jesus on the cross.  He was a faithful witness to what happened when Jesus was on earth and made it known through letters he wrote to believers to encourage them.

For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.  He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.   For we did not follow cleverly devised stories when we told you about the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ in power, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty. He received honor and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”  We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.  (1 Peter 1:18-20; 2 Peter 1:16-18 NIV)

Peter and others were eye witnesses to what Jesus did when He was here on earth.  Because of the love of the Father lavished on us, through Jesus, we now have eternal life for evermore.  Are we willing to witness about the good news of Jesus and the change that God has made in our lives?  The power of the Holy Spirit will enable us to tell our story to others so that they also may believe.  If we open our mouths, God promises to fill them.  Are you willing to be a faithful witness today?
