A Clay Pot

Monday October 14, 2013

I have this special clay mug. It's huge -- about 6 inches across.  It's kind of square.  The edges aren't too smooth.  It’s not too pretty but it’s very special.  I've had it sitting on my desk for almost 20 years.  I use it to hold my pens. Every time I see it I remember something lovely.

Some teachers I used to work with in Taiwan made it for me and gave it to me when I came back to Canada. We had worked together for a number of years.  We'd supported each other in times of laughter and tears.  We'd learned from one another and now we were going to be separated.  Each teacher painted their name on the mug and the art teacher glazed it and fired it.  I think about these wonderful friends and pray for them when I see this clay pot.

There’s a lovely story in the Bible about someone making a clay pot.  God wanted us to remember His loving care and shaping of our lives and so He gave us this story.

This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: “Go down to the potter’s house, and there I will give you my message.” So I went down to the potter’s house, and I saw him working at the wheel.  But the pot he was shaping from the clay was marred in his hands; so the potter formed it into another pot, shaping it as seemed best to him.  Then the word of the Lord came to me.  He said, “Can I not do with you, Israel, as this potter does?” declares the Lord. “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in my hand, Israel.  (Jeremiah 18:1-6 NIV)

God in heaven created you and me.  He made us with great love.  He knows the good plans He has for our lives.  God knows what we need from day to day in order to become the most beautiful person, filled with love and goodness. He invites us to entrust our lives into His loving hands so He can do something that touches hearts and lives of people around us.  What answer will we give God today to the question, "Can I not do with you as this potter does?"
