Addiction And The Power To Change (2)
Tuesday October 8, 2013
When we come to understand that our life is unmanageable and we need a power greater that ourselves to overcome our addictions, we seek help through programs, ministries and strategies that have been proven to help others who have been where we are right now. However, programs, ministries and strategies do not save us nor do they set us free. Our best intentions, working a program, or being part of a group, will not change us. The one who changes us and sets us free from the sins of our past is Jesus Christ. Through belief in Him we are “born again” into a new life and a new family, called “children of God.” By faith we die to our old way of life in addiction and dependency and a fresh new life begins for us. This is true life in recovery.

Jesus said, “I tell you most solemnly that anyone who chooses a life of sin is trapped in a dead-end life and is, in fact, a slave. A slave is a transient, who can’t come and go at will. The Son, though, has an established position, the run of the house. So if the Son sets you free, you are free through and through. (John 8:35-36 MSG)
Adjusting to our new status may not be easy as others may doubt our sincerity or desire to follow the road to recovery. Our family and old friends who watched us go down the path of destruction will find it hard to believe that we really want to change. The Bible is our handbook for direction in how to proceed in this new life in recovery. Jesus died in our place that we might have new life and have it to the full. He also gave us power, through His Holy Spirit, to accomplish what we have begun.

Jesus said, “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” (Matthew 11:28-30 MSG)
Are we willing to submit to Jesus as He leads us on the unknown path to recovery? As we trust Him He will lead us beside still waters and restore our soul.
