Eternity And The Human Heart (1)

Monday November 11, 2013

I have seen the burden God has placed on us all.  Yet God has made everything beautiful for its own time. He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.  (Ecclesiastes 3:10-11 NIV)

Some of us have just had a beautiful summer and now the season has changed into autumn or fall as some call it.   Those lazy hazy hot days that we experienced are gone and the chill of autumn is creeping in as the days grow shorter.   After autumn comes the cold days of winter and then spring will come again.    As well as spring blossoms on the trees we usually see large shows of tulips and daffodils which I particularly enjoy.

In order to have beautiful tulips and daffodils in the spring we need to plant the bulbs in the fall.    The physical bulbs we plant in the fall are not what we see in the spring.  In the spring we see the beautiful flowers that the planted bulbs become.   Do we do anything to make these beautiful flowers appear in spring?   Yes we do!   They will be a product of our action in planting the bulbs in the fall.   God, however, is the one that changes these bulbs into the beautiful flowers we will see in spring.

You just read some words from the Bible where God said that “He has planted eternity in the human heart”.   If God plants “eternity” in our hearts, what do you imagine he expects to grow?   Like the beautiful flowers we see from the earlier planting of a bulb, God wants us to grow into the beautiful people He created us to be.  Jesus has gone to prepare an eternal place for us to dwell in.  However, we need to sow the seeds now that will bring us into that glorious place in God’s time.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” ( John 14:1-3 NKJV)

In order to have eternal life we need to plant eternity in our hearts now by accepting Jesus as our Saviour and Lord.  Like the action we take in planting the tulip and daffodil bulbs in the autumn and look forward to the spring flowers, we need to plant the word of God in our hearts and watch for the way He changes us from the inside out.  As we follow the ways of the Lord we will, in His time, become the persons He created us to be.  When Jesus returns for us, He will take us to that place that He has prepared for us and we will live with Him forever.  Eternity is truly in our hearts!

What are you planting in your heart today?  Will it become beautiful in His time?
