REMEMBERING THE BENEFITS

It is easy to complain about life, but in a famous poem King David lists plenty of things for which to praise God. Those who welcome God into their lives receive all of these benefits without deserving any of them. No matter how difficult our life's journey, we can always count our blessings—past, present, and future. What do we have to thank God for?

Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise his holy name. Praise the Lord, my soul, and forget not all his benefits. Who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion, Who satisfies your desires with good things so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.  PSALM 103:1-5 NIV

The more birthdays we have, the easier it is to forget names and details.  It is easy to go from one room to another for a particular purpose only to arrive through the door and forget why we went there. We have to rethink or retrace our steps until we remember our original purpose and then complete the task.

We all know at some level that God forgives and heals us, lifts us out of dark places, and pours out love and compassion on us.  However, when difficulties and troubled circumstances besiege us and seem endless, we can forget all that God has done, and all God can, and will do for us.  Thankfully, we can retrace God's goodness in our minds and tell our thoughts and emotions to remember God's goodness.  As we remember, we will gain strength to rise above our current challenges and circumstances.  Our faith will grow in God's faithfulness to help us today, just like He did in our past circumstances.

Remembering the benefits we have received from God opens our hearts to even more.  Today, let's give thanks as we remember God's goodness in the past and welcome His comfort, encouragement, and strength in the future.
