Ancient YouTube Viral Video

It’s an amazing story.  It would be front page news in the town in our time.  It’s a story of someone who courageously crossed boundaries to care for someone who thought they were hopelessly stuck on the margins of society.   The encounter between these two people had incredibly positive effects on all of the local society. It would have been a YouTube video gone viral for sure.

John tells us this story in his Gospel account of the life of Jesus.  It’s the story of Jesus leaving his people and his familiar surroundings to go through a place called Samaria where the residents were considered the detestable people.  At a time when men ruled the world and women weren’t much more than merchandise to be acquired and sold, this man Jesus took time to courageously cross boundaries in order to come close to a woman of ill repute.  He cared enough to speak with her and offer her a new way of life.   You can read the whole story in John 4 but here’s the first part of the story.  (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john+4&version=CEV)

Jesus left Judea and started for Galilee again. This time he had to go through Samaria, and on his way he came to the town of Sychar. It was near the field that Jacob had long ago given to his son Joseph. The well that Jacob had dug was still there, and Jesus sat down beside it because he was tired from traveling. It was noon, and after Jesus' disciples had gone into town to buy some food, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. Jesus asked her, “Would you please give me a drink of water?” “You are a Jew,” she replied, “and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink of water when Jews and Samaritans won’t have anything to do with each other?”  (John 4:3-9 CEV)

Whenever we think our lives are too insignificant, too unhealthy, too broken, or too lost, we need to remember that God has his eye out for us.  God loves us and wants to help us today.  God is making all the approaches to come close to us, leaving only one necessary decision for us to make – will we accept and welcome him or shut him out?
