June 13, 2014 Trouble

I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 NIV)

How many people have problems in their life today?  Some of us may have health problems, so we worry.  Some of us may have wealth problems - either too little money or too much money, so we worry.   Others of us may have family problems, so we worry.  We tend to carry the problems of our parents, our spouses, our children and our grandchildren. We just keep adding to our own load by adding on the burdens of those we love. Sometimes the load gets so heavy that we just want to lay it down and run.

Some of our problems have been presented to us by the environment we were brought up in.  Other problems have resulted from our own wrong choices.  Even the wrong choices of those we love and care for will cause problems in our lives.  Just getting older brings its own set of problems.  All of us have trouble or will have trouble.  In the verse from the Bible we have just read Jesus assures us of that fact.

How do we handle trouble when it comes?  Do we come to Jesus and pray and petition Him to help us in our time of need?  Or, do we try to handle problems alone letting worry and despair zap our strength, leaving us irritable and hard to get along with.  Jesus came to rescue us from our sin and to help us with all our problems.  He is sufficient for all our needs.  A person who is lost or drowning needs someone to come along and rescue them.  If you were lost or drowning would you just say to the person who came to rescue you “Leave me alone I want to handle things by myself”?  That would be very foolish.  God through His word in the Bible tells us;

“Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." (Psalm 50:15 NKJV)

God will see us safely through our times of trouble in this life on earth and, when this life is over, He will come and receive us into the fullness of life in eternity with Him.  In the middle of our troubles, we need to take time to remember the God who loves us. He neither slumbers nor sleeps but watches over us continually.  We can cast all our care on Him for He cares for us. He truly is an awesome God.  The psalmist has written a message of comfort for each of us

The LORD is your keeper; The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.  The LORD shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The LORD shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore. (Psalm 121:5-8 NKJV)

As children of God, His protection extends to us not only through this life, but also into eternity.  God will see us safely through our times of trouble in this life on earth and, when this life is over, He will come and receive us into the fullness of life in eternity with Him.

Thank you Lord for being our fortress and our help in times of trouble.  We are forever grateful that you care.
