Slavery To Sin

Monday July 21, 2014

A person who chooses a life of sin is eventually trapped by that sin.  Initially the person is deceived into thinking they will always be free to choose whether to follow their chosen way or not.  However, sin is not satisfied with just a little bit of life it will always seek to become more important than life itself.  Anyone who has lived in addiction knows that the only focus they have is on their next fix.  They are slaves to the whims of the sin that has bound them to feed their addiction.

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.  (Galatians 5:1 NIV)

When we do whatever we want, whenever we want, life can be painful, even though we are getting our own way.  By our actions we’ve learned that thinking only of the pleasure of the moment has brought us into bondage to those things that we once found pleasurable.  The darkness that we once thought we would never be involved in has somehow become our daily living.   Our lives are truly unmanageable and we begin to look around to find a way to freedom and release from all the ugliness that is our daily life.  In our quest for freedom we believe that there must be a power greater that ourselves that can restore us to sanity.  Jesus said He was sent for that very reason.

The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. (Luke 4:18-19 NIV)

When a person is free they have the opportunity to come and go as they please.  A slave, however, does not have that choice.   He is only obedient through fear and trembling to his master.  Jesus came to earth to set free those who are oppressed by sin.  He also came to proclaim the Lord’s favour on everyone who believes on Him.

So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.  (John 8:36 NIV)

Today, let’s make it our choice to seek freedom through Jesus and allow Him to break the ties that keep us in slavery to sin.
