Seeing Ourselves

Thursday August 28, 2014

How do we see ourselves?  To get an accurate picture of ourselves we need to use a mirror.  When we look into a mirror each morning we do so because we want to improve what we see.  We put on clothes, brush our hair, and may even add a little makeup so that others might be dazzled by what they see.

During the day, if we developed a red spot on our face we might ignore it because we cannot see the red spot until we again look into the mirror.  Have you ever looked at someone with food clinging to their teeth or on the edge of their mouth?  That person doesn’t know the food is there. Sometimes we may be kind and tell them and other times we may be reluctant to tell them for fear of embarrassing them.  Until the person looks into a mirror they cannot see the red spot or the food.  Typically, a person would then try to do something about the blemish so no further people will notice.

From a spiritual point of view, what do we do with what shows up when we look at our lives? Through His word in the Bible, God has provided a mirror that helps us assess who we are and what is going on inside of us.  Sometimes we try to dress up our behaviour when we are in company just like we do each morning with our outward appearance but God is not interested in our outward appearance, He is looking at our heart.  Do we want, in a spiritual sense, to be told we have a “red spot” or “some food clinging to our teeth”?

As for God, his way is perfect: The LORD's word is flawless; he shields all who take refuge in him.  For who is God besides the LORD? And who is the Rock except our God?  (Psalm 18:30-31 NIV)

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  (2 Timothy 3:16-17 NIV)

Today, let’s look into the mirror of God’s word as it is written in the Bible so that we may see how we can improve what is revealed there.
