Mountains Help From God

Monday November 3, 2014

Mountains surround us here in Vancouver, BC.  Look to the north and there are the North Shore Mountains.  The lights of Grouse Mountain are a landmark and are visible each night.  Whistler Mountain is famous around the world for skiers and hikers. When we drive south into United States we see Mount Rainier as we drive along I5.  Who can forget the day Mount St Helens in Oregon erupted.  When we drive out to the Fraser Valley along Hwy1 we see the spectacular volcano Mount Baker.  There's one stretch of the road between 264th Street and Mount Lehman Hwy where the view is undeniably amazing.  As you drive over the top of the hill and around the curve, Mount Baker comes fully into view.  On a sunny day it is breathtaking.

Mountains are beautiful to see.  They remind us of strength and stability.  They reach high into the sky and spread out in wide stable places in the valley.  God talks about mountains in the Bible.  God wants us to look at the mountains around us and be reminded of the scripture’s beautiful words which are strong and true.

For example:

1.  As God cares for us and blesses us, we can feel as secure as a mountain.  Your favor, O Lord, made me as secure as a mountain.  Then you turned away from me, and I was shattered. (Psalm 30:7 NLT)

2.  When life seems unsteady around us, God wants us to remember He was there even before the mountains appeared.  When we put our trust in God, God will accompany us through all our changing times. Before the mountains were born, before you gave birth to the earth and the world, from beginning to end, you are God.  (Psalm 90:2 NLT)

3.  Mountains remind us that God is above us and around us.  People long ago often spoke of mountains as the place where God lived.  We know that God is much bigger than any mountain, and God is the creator of the mountains, but mountains can still remind us to look up to God and be assured that God is listening and God will answer.  I cried out to the Lord, and he answered me from his holy mountain.  (Psalm 3:4 NLT)

4.  We can take great comfort from the famous words about God’s help recorded in Psalm 121.  I look up to the mountains—does my help come from there?  My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth!  He will not let you stumble; the one who watches over you will not slumber.  Indeed, he who watches over Israel never slumbers or sleeps.  The Lord himself watches over you! The Lord stands beside you as your protective shade.  The sun will not harm you by day, nor the moon at night.  The Lord keeps you from all harm and watches over your life.  The Lord keeps watch over you as you come and go, both now and forever. (Psalm 121)

The most precious and famous mountain of all is the mountain where God made his deliverance available to each one of us. Jesus was crucified and died on a cross on Mount Calvary.  We could not forgive ourselves for our own sins.  We could not heal ourselves of the things that trouble us.  However, God made a way for us, on a mountain.  Jesus died in our place that we might be liberated from the bondage of sin.  And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left.  (Luke 23:33 NKJV)

Let every mountain we see today remind us that God has made a way for us to live in His love forever.
