What Determines My Value?
Monday January 26, 2015

Low self-esteem. No self-worth. We hear these thoughts from many who suffer with addictive lifestyles and we recognize these thoughts often in our own hearts and lives. We make a mistake and we feel like we are a failure. When others don’t approve of us we can’t seem to cope. We feel like no matter how hard we try we can’t ever measure up. What are we left with? A general feeling of hopelessness that God never intended us to have.
So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground." Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! (Genesis 1:27-28, 31 NLT)

Whenever we question our worth we need to challenge our thinking with what God says about us. Low self-esteem is based on what we believe about ourself. No matter where we have received negative messages which caused us to feel worthless we need to tell ourselves that God does not make junk. When God looked at the humans He had created He said they were very good. Our self-worth should be based on what God says about us, not what we think, and not what others say.
For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. (Psalm 139:13-14 NIV)

God created each of us to have lives of beauty, meaning and purpose. Our value is created and given by God. It is ensured by God’s plan for our lives and God’s promise to bring that purpose to fulfillment.
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago. (Psalm 139:13-14 NIV, Jeremiah 29:11, Ephesians 2:10 NLT)
