Faith (1)

Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 NIV)
How can one tell if they have faith? Our faith is obvious in everyday things which we cannot see but have assurance in. We have faith when we sit on a chair that it will bear our weight because that’s what the chair was made for. If we drive a car at 100 Kilometers per hour we have faith in the car and the integrity of the makers of the car that when we want to stop the brakes will work. How about our cell phone? When we press a few numbers on the phone key pad we have faith we will reach the person we are trying to contact. How about the alarm within the cell phone? Do we expect it to alert us at the time we have programmed it to? We have so much faith in the engineering of that little piece of cell phone technology that we tend to become dependent on it. However, what happens when we forget to charge it? In all of the above products it is likely that we do not know the maker of the merchandise but have faith that the product will do what it was designed to do. Faith, however, is not proof! It is merely belief in the product and in the manufacturer.

From observation of our behaviour in everyday life it would appear that we have faith in things which we know are designed for a specific purpose. The book of Genesis in the Bible tells us that God created the heavens and the earth. As architect of the earth, God formed it to be inhabited. God is orderly and thorough in everything He does. His order in creating this beautiful earth and the creatures that inhabit it is the work of an intelligent artistic designer. The sun does not forget to rise each day and the moon and stars come out each night. We can trust God with the rotation of our planet and the seasons it goes through. Because He made us to inhabit this earth at a precise time and has a specific purpose for each of us we can trust Him with our lives. We may not be able to see the God we trust but He is evident in all that He has created and His plans are being worked out according to His will.

For this is what the Lord says—he who created the heavens, he is God; he who fashioned and made the earth, he founded it; he did not create it to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited—he says: “I am the Lord, and there is no other”. “As long as the earth endures, seedtime and harvest, cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night will never cease.” (Isaiah 45:18; Genesis 8:22 NIV)
Today, as we observe the magnificent work of God’s hands, let’s determine to strengthen our faith in what we do not see.
