God’s Direction

Thursday March 5, 2015

God is good and God desires good for each of us all the time. God is persistently inviting us to know Him and to know all the good plans He has for us.  Do we really want to know God and His plans? We often think we do but when God shows us what He's really like and what His plans actually are, we don’t quite know what to do about it as He and His plans are beyond all that we could ask for or even imagine.  This was the case for Peter, James, and John when Jesus took them up a mountain one day and He was revealed to them in an amazing way.

Six days later Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up a high mountain to be alone. As the men watched, Jesus’ appearance was transformed, and his clothes became dazzling white, far whiter than any earthly bleach could ever make them. Then Elijah and Moses appeared and began talking with Jesus.  Peter exclaimed, “Rabbi, it’s wonderful for us to be here! Let’s make three shelters as memorials—one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.   He said this because he didn’t really know what else to say, for they were all terrified. Then a cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is my dearly loved Son. Listen to him.”  Suddenly, when they looked around, Moses and Elijah were gone, and they saw only Jesus with them. As they went back down the mountain, he told them not to tell anyone what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead.  (Mark 9:2-9 NLT)

Peter, James, and John knew about Elijah the prophet and Moses the law-giver from their past.  They knew Elijah and Moses spoke on behalf of God to the people.  Now God demonstrates that their work was all about helping people focus on the coming of His son, Jesus, who would not only show the way to God but open that way up for all of us.

God invites you and me today to do what He invited Peter, James, and John to do that day, "This is my dearly loved Son.  Listen to him."
