Prejudice And Peace (1)

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.  (Galatians 3:28 NIV)

In recent months we’ve heard many stories on the United States news networks which appear to demonstrate a climate of racial prejudice among police forces in major US cities.  This is just one more story in a long line of stories of prejudice around the world and down through the centuries.

Since time began, we have had to live with the poisonous practice of prejudice. Most wars in our history have been started because of prejudice and hatred. The Holocaust came from this same poison and so did slavery.  Some women look back and decide to hate all men because women have been treated unfairly in the past.  Whites and First Nations peoples often have similar negative reactions to one another, not based on what has been done by someone today, but rather based on their race and what happened years ago.  We see something on television about an ethnic group such as the Sikhs or Spanish and we immediately respond with some thought or comment that makes that whole group of people less than or worse than us.  The poor judge the rich and the rich judge the poor.  The list is endless.

You and I may not agree with everything another person believes or does, but we have no right to hate him because of it, and we certainly shouldn't mistreat him. God never told us we have to approve of everyone's beliefs, choices, and actions, but we are commanded to love everyone.  This is the first step towards seeing others as God sees them.

My dear brothers and sisters, how can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others?   For example, suppose someone comes into your meeting dressed in fancy clothes and expensive jewelry, and another comes in who is poor and dressed in dirty clothes. If you give special attention and a good seat to the rich person, but you say to the poor one, “You can stand over there, or else sit on the floor”—well, doesn’t this discrimination show that your judgments are guided by evil motives?  (James 2:1-4 NLT)
