You are my portion, Lord; I have promised to obey your words. I have sought your face with all my heart; be gracious to me according to your promise. I have considered my ways and have turned my steps to your statutes. I will hasten and not delay to obey your commands. Though the wicked bind me with ropes, I will not forget your law. At midnight I rise to give you thanks for your righteous laws. I am a friend to all who fear you, to all who follow your precepts. The earth is filled with your love, Lord; teach me your decrees. (Psalm 119:57-64 NIV)

Our new life with God in recovery is a journey of learning and growing. God promises to be everything we need and to fill our lives with love, joy and peace. We have lived for years on our own flawed understanding so there’s a lot to learn about God, as well as about His purpose and plan for our lives.

Learning takes place, not only when we are exposed to new information, but when we respond to that information. As we act and observe we get to assess what is true and reliable or what is empty and false. Trusting and obeying what God says is the way for us to learn what life in recovery is really like. To live life according to what God says, we will need to make choices and changes about what we believe and what we say and do.

· Have a wholehearted desire to know God and God’s will for every area of life.
· Be intentional about asking God to direct us moment by moment throughout the day.
· Be willing to honestly look at what we are doing.
· Change our desires, our thoughts, and our actions when our ways differ from what God shows us.
· Be quick to obey. Be consistent. Don’t be complacent. Don’t compromise in even one area.
· Regularly give thanks for all the lessons learned and the growth we observe from day to day, even when our circumstances seem as dark as midnight.
God’s promise to fill our lives with love, joy and peace as we walk obediently with Him is trustworthy. Today is a good day to start trusting and obeying God in all our ways.
