Desperate Measures In Desperate Times (2)
Tuesday June 21, 2016

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. (Philippians 4:6 NLT)
Yesterday we reflected on an event from 1 Kings 17 in the Bible and today we will continue to explore the result of the widow’s obedience.
God made a promise to a desperate widow through Elijah, a wise man of God, who was also facing a huge problem due to a drought in the country. Through Elijah, God instructed the widow about how she was to use the remaining measly provisions she had. She obeyed the word of the man of God and did what she could, and God did the miraculous as He promised.

I wonder what would have happened if the widow had tried to satisfy herself with her limited resources first? Fortunately for her, she believed God and acted in obedience to what God said. She didn’t sit down and wait passively for God to cook meals for her. She did what she could, in the way God directed, and found out that God could be trusted.
Jesus taught His disciples and continues to teach us, that if we will make trusting God more important than anything else, He will take care of us better than we can take care of ourselves. Today is a good time to take God at His word and obey Him from a trusting heart.

But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. (Matthew 6:33 NIV)
Even though desperate times can trigger pain and stubbornness in us, with God’s help we can react differently. Let’s ask God today to help us put away our own efforts and enter into His way of living life in recovery.
Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! (2 Corinthians 5:17 NLT)
