Understanding The Care Of God (4)

Thursday June 30, 2016

Life is a gift.  Our new life in recovery is not something we earn but something we are given.  It is a gift from God.  Coming to understand God’s care for us is an essential part of our new way of life.

“The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again.   No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.”  (John 10:17-18 NIV)

Evidence, related to Jesus’ crucifixion, declares that the Roman soldiers, Jewish religious leaders, and the Roman governor put Jesus to death.   Others proclaim that your sin, my sin, and the sin of whole world was the cause of the death of Jesus.  According to Jesus’ own words, recorded in John 10:18, none of the above is true.  Jesus said that no one takes His life from Him.

When we decide to give someone a gift we consider their personality and the reason for the gift.  We shop and purchase the gift, paying for it with our own money.  Then we offer it to the person we bought it for.  Did that person do anything to initiate the gift?  Did they decide the time or the place the gift is bought?  Did they pay for the gift?  What part does the intended recipient play in the gift giving process?  They just have to receive what’s being offered.  When they do, the giver is pleased.

We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ. And this is true for everyone who believes, no matter who we are.  For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard.  For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.  (Romans 3:22-23, 6:23 NLT)

Jesus who had no sin, freely became sin for us, so that in Him, we could be made right with God and have life forevermore.  We didn’t kill Jesus. He willingly paid the price for our gift of eternal life.  Have we accepted the gift?  If not, are we willing to accept it today?
