Sunday Psalm Lifestyle Of Thanksgiving

Sunday October 16, 2016

I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath! How kind the Lord is! How good he is! So merciful, this God of ours!  The Lord protects those of childlike faith; I was facing death, and he saved me.  Let my soul be at rest again, for the Lord has been good to me. He has saved me from death, my eyes from tears, my feet from stumbling. What can I offer the Lord for all he has done for me? I will keep my promises to the Lord in the presence of all his people. I will offer you a sacrifice of thanksgiving and call on the name of the Lord. (Psalm 116:1-2, 5-8, 12, 14, 17 NLT)

There are many things about God to love but one of the most amazing reasons is that when we are running around in our addiction and find ourselves in chaotic, life-threatening situations, God is still available to help us if we will call out to Him.  Many of us have stories of how God saved us from what seemed like certain death, and for some of us that happened more than once!

What kind of response should we have in the face of such kindness and faithful love?  The writer of this Psalm suggests praying, keeping my promises to the Lord, and offering a sacrifice of thanksgiving.  That’s finding a new way of facing life’s problems rather than running away from them or trying to cover them up with an addictive substance or some other destructive habit.

That’s remembering that just as God was with us in our darkest hour, so He is with us now; just like He heard us in the back alley or the prison cell, so He is ready and willing to hear us now and act on our behalf.  A sacrifice of thanksgiving is looking to God with faith and trust before the solution to our problem is obvious.

A lifestyle of thanksgiving is built on memories of God’s faithful love.  Let’s make a memory today.
