Remembering God's Help In Time Of Trouble

Saturday November 12, 2016

Men and women who served in times of war have much to teach us from their experience, strength, and hope.  Their service required great sacrifice regarding the comforts of home and family.  They witnessed unspeakable suffering.  They not only put themselves in harm’s way but were constantly brought face to face with fellow soldiers in need of immediate help.  Each had to reach out to help the other.  No one was immune from the need for comfort and support.  They were there for each other.

O God, have mercy on me, for people are hounding me. My foes attack me all day long. I am constantly hounded by those who slander me, and many are boldly attacking me. But when I am afraid, I will put my trust in you. I praise God for what he has promised.  I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?they spend their days plotting to harm me.  They come together to spy on me—watching my every step, eager to kill me. Don’t let them get away with their wickedness; … You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book. (Psalm 56:1-8 NLT)

If we seek Him, God is always there for us with comfort, support, strength and help.  Psalm 56 is a beautiful poem describing God's sure help for us in difficult times. The writer lists traumatic and hurtful circumstances one after another to God.  Even though he is afraid, he calls out with the assurance that in all these situations God can be trusted.  When everything seems to be falling apart the writer of this Psalm is certain that God knows, God cares, and God will help.

As we turn our will and our lives over to the care of God and share our experience, strength, and hope, we will find that because of the help we have received, we can become a help to others.

Heavenly Father, Thank you for all who contribute to our peace and freedom.  Thank you for remembrance gatherings, recovery meetings, prayer groups, and church congregations who help us remember Your goodness
which brings life, rest, and safety to our souls.
