Serenity Saturday Peaceful Sleep

Saturday November 5, 2016

For most of us who live in North America we get to turn our clocks back an hour before we go to bed tonight and enjoy an extra hour of sleep.

Sleep is an issue for many of us who have experienced trauma and/or have been severely impacted by the time we spent in active addiction.  One of the gifts God wants to give us is peaceful sleep.

In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe.  Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take. You can go to bed without fear; you will lie down and sleep soundly. (Psalm 4:8, Proverbs 3:5-6, 24 NLT)

When we turn our will and our life over to the care of God, and continue to improve our conscious contact with Him, we will experience peace of mind and heart developing within us. We will be aware of the Holy Spirit’s love, joy, and peace within our being and our sleep will be sweet because we have cast all our cares on Him.

For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. (2 Corinthians 3:17 NLT, Galatians 5:22-23 NIV)

As peace floods our inner soul we will find rest and will grow more and more contented.  We will be able to sleep as peacefully as a little child in its mother's arms.

My heart is not proud, Lord, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. But I have calmed and quieted myself, I am like a weaned child with its mother; like a weaned child I am content. (Psalm 131:1-2 NIV)

Lord, I am grateful for not just one extra hour of peaceful sleep tonight, but for many nights of restful sleep because I trust in Your unfailing love for me.
