Jesus’ Death And Recovering Addicts (1)

Monday April 10, 2017

What does the suffering and death of Jesus have to do with us – recovering addicts?  It is God’s way of providing everything we need to deal with the injustice and sin that has caused chaos in our lives.

Most of us have acknowledged that we have harmed ourselves and others by our neglect, our actions, our words, or some other way.  We persisted in self-harm for months or even years.   Only when our own pain was too great to bear did we seek help and look for a new way of life.  The death and resurrection of Jesus, which we celebrate at Easter, is a reminder that Jesus came to earth to forgive, heal, and restore.  Where we experienced evil done to us, or done by us, Jesus, by His death on the cross, paid the price for our freedom from the penalty of all that sin.  Jesus allowed the sin and evil of mankind to be put on Him at the cross so that we could be free from its power. Our part is to believe and accept what He has done for us.

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross. Therefore, God elevated him to the place of highest honor and gave him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. (Philippians 2:5-11 NLT)

We can bundle up our pain, our brokenness, our hatred, our self-pity, our addictive behaviour, our sadness, our sorrow, and hand it all over to Jesus.  When we turn away from sin and turn our will and life over to His care, we are accepted as children of the Living God.

Prayer:  Loving God, I am grateful for all You have done for me.  Help me to wholeheartedly stand firm on Your Word and move forward with You in my life in recovery.  Amen
