Sunday Psalm Double-minded

Sunday May 7, 2017

When we were in our addiction we were busy rushing around doing what we had to do to ensure we would supply our bodies with the substance we craved.  We put our hope in our supplier and paid money so that we could end up in the insane merry-go-round of addiction.  In our own way, we gladly contributed to the wealth that someone else would spend.  Now, in the sanity of recovery, we choose to put our hope in God who has promised to meet all our needs.

We are merely moving shadows, and all our busy rushing ends in nothing.  We heap up wealth, not knowing who will spend it.  And so, Lord, where do I put my hope?  My only hope is in you.  Rescue me from my rebellion.  Do not let fools mock me. I am silent before you; I won’t say a word, for my punishment is from you. (Psalm 39:6-9 NLT)

As we make choices for recovery and new life, our former companions in addiction may mock us.  Their unspoken desire is for us to remain with them in rebellion against God, often for their own personal gain.  If we listen to these mockers and their persuasive ways, we risk being drawn back into the bondage of addiction.  We may find ourselves in the double-minded state of wanting to go forward, but at the same time, falling backwards.

In our double-mindedness, we often blame God when things, that are the result of our own poor choices, start to go wrong.  God has promised that if we reach out to Him, He will help us stand firm in Christ Jesus.  The Bible tells us that those who follow God’s instructions will have great peace.  The alternative is true for those who do not.  When our actions go against what God is teaching us, we need to become silent before Him and reflect on His invitation to choose life.

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.  (James 1:12)

Prayer:  Heavenly Father, Help me to single-mindedly follow You in all my ways.  My hope for a purposeful life is in You alone.  AMEN
