Rest And Recreation In Unexpected Seasons Of Inactivity

Tuesday June 30, 2020

God wants our lives to be filled with fruitfulness.  He has created us with life giving abilities and talents but knows that we need to balance seasons of action with periods of recreation and reflection.

We have certainly had more time to rest in the long weeks since early March when we had restrictions put on our movements due to the COVID-19 virus disease spread.  While initially it might have seemed like we would have lots of time to sleep late, watch Netflix, read books, and just hang out, as time has moved along we've not always experienced this time as one of rest.

All the plans many of us might have had changed in an instant when people started to get sick and health orders were announced.  While we have all been surprised by the impact of the virus on our daily lives, there's no surprise in this to God.  He wants us to find real rest that comes from peace of mind and heart not just from lack of activity.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. (Matthew 11:28-29 NLT)

We are all hoping that in the summer months restrictions will be relaxed and we will be able to get out into nature, maybe go for a picnic or a swim, certainly have get-togethers with friends and family during the warm bright days.  However we will spend this summer, whatever impact ongoing physical distancing will have on our daily movements and gatherings, we know that God will be with us and will help us enjoy each day and live with a quiet heart and peaceful mind, if we choose to follow Him.

You will show me the way of life, granting me the joy of your presence and the pleasures of living with you forever. (Psalm 16:11 NLT)

Prayer:  Thank You God for preparing a way of life for me that is both fruitful and playful.  As I go forward in this unusual season of required physical distancing, help me to look for peace of mind in You, and enjoy each day as You give it to me.  Amen
