Forgive Us As We Forgive Others

When the disciples of Jesus asked him to teach them how to pray, it is significant that Jesus’ teaching included asking forgiveness for their sin based on how they forgave others who had sinned against them. How often do we hear someone say, “I can never forgive that person for what they have done to me.” God desires that we love one another as He has loved us, but we truly cannot love a person who has harmed us until we see them in the light of God’s forgiveness of our sin, and the amazing love He exhibits towards us.

If we see the sin we have committed as worthy of forgiveness but see the hurt we have sustained from others as not worthy of forgiveness, then something is wrong with our thinking. To be forgiven and to forgive is the only way to peace in our hearts. Some people came to Jesus and told Him of tragedies that occurred in their area. It seems they thought the ones who suffered deserved what happened because of the way they were living, but Jesus said:

“…do you think that those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them were worse offenders than all the other people who live in Jerusalem? No, I tell you, but unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” (Luke 13:4-5 NASB)

I have gained perfect freedom by following your teachings. When I am hurting, I find comfort in your promise that leads to life. (Psalm 119:45, 50 CEV)
Prayer: Heavenly Father, As You have loved and forgiven me, I choose to love and forgive those who have harmed me. Amen
