Prayer To Help Us Look Up During The Difficult Days of the Pandemic

Thursday April 2, 2020
For several days now we have been coming to God with some of the great needs we see around us as a result of the spread of the COVID-19 virus.  Today, I want us to “Look up.  Look way way up.”  Saying that reminds me of a short children’s TV program that played for many years here in Canada called “The Friendly Giant.”  The program always began in the same way.  You’d hear a voice describing a scene and then the camera would stop at a big boot and you’d hear someone say, “Look up.  Look way up” and the camera would pan up from the book to the face of the giant named Friendly.  He’d invite us to his castle, lift up the draw bridge and open the door and then he’d arrange 3 chairs for folks to sit on and once again when all that was prepared you’d hear his voice again saying, “Look up.  Look way up” and again the camera would pan up to where Friendly the Giant was ready to visit with his friends.  I’ve put a link to an episode right under the  video on the blog.  If you don’t know the program have a listen for the first 2 or 3 minutes.

We may think that our difficulties these days are huge and the predictions of the not days, not weeks, but months in social isolation seems so very long.  But,  when we consider the God of time and eternity, our problems are quite tiny from His perspective just like the furniture in the Friendly Giant’s castle and God’s faithful love is very strong and enduring.

When we walk with God we are assured that God will make everything beautiful in its time.

Thankfully it doesn’t depend on us.  We will not always get it right.  Governments won’t always do the right things at the right time for the right reasons.  But, God can be depended on to go with us through it all.

So, today we can pray in faith and expect God to carry us through today.

Let’s pray:

Heavenly Father,

The news today tells us that more than 1 million people  have now been infected with the covid-19 virus.  Tens of thousands of people have died already and in many parts of the world the surge and peak of the illnesses and deaths has not yet come.  Many are fearful for themselves and for their loved ones.  The spread of the disease seems unstoppable and the carnage on news clips each day from Europe to New York is simply devastating.  If we didn’t know You, God, we’d have to think things were spinning out of control and wonder if there was any hope.

But, You are God and have been from before time and will be long after all of us are gone.  You are looking into each one of our lives today and offering to make good out of even these extremely difficult situations.

Help us today God, to look up, to look way up, and see Your loving face and trust Your generous and loving heart.  We don’t understand all that is going on.  We don’t see all that You are doing.  It just looks bleak in so many ways with suffering and challenges in the lives of way too many people.

However, we don’t see all there is to see.  Even when we can’t see it, You’re working.  Even when we can’t feel it, You’re working.  With the writer of the song today, in faith, we proclaim, “You are waymaker, miracle worker, promise keeper.  Light in the darkness.  My God, that is who You are.”   And You are here working in this place – wherever this place is for each one of us.  You are touching every heart.  You are healing and restoring, comforting and uplifting each one who turns to You.  We worship You.  We trust You.  We commit our will and our life into Your hands for You are good and You are good to us.  Amen

If you have a minute click on the link in the post and listen to the song “Waymaker.”  Let’s let our faithful God lift us up – way up today in His love and care.  Have a wonderful day.
