Prayer For Proper Perspective

Sunday May 31, 2020
Our stability in this world in whatever conditions each day brings is found not through government announcements but rather through how we see ourselves and God in this day.

God’s love for us is large and unfailing.  God has come to make His home with us and to take us through this day safely.  Our life has meaning and satisfaction when we grow a little more in our understanding and experience of how amazing God is.

So the Word became human
and made his home among us.
He was full of unfailing love
and faithfulness.
And we have seen his glory,
the glory of the Father’s
one and only Son.
John 1:14

While we will enjoy getting into the outdoors more and being with friends more, they are such small signs of the deep joy that God wants to fill our hearts with as we spend more time with Him and find our relationship with Him growing stronger and deeper.  So today, we pray that God will help us do that – grow in grace and in our knowledge of God  Let’s pray for that now:

Thank you God for coming to us, for becoming human so we could come to know You and how deep your love for us truly is.  We so often don’t live in loving ways towards you or others and yet your love for us is unfailing.  Whenever we reach out to you, you are there for us.  Nothing in all the world can separate us from your love – and certainly not the COVID-19 virus or the physical distancing measures we are all living under.

Help us today to see how amazing You truly are.  We make you so small and so normal when you are so powerful and pure and tender and you love us with such a fierce love that  is beyond our minds to be able to understand. We’re so glad that just like a little newborn baby who is so dearly loved by their parents but can’t understand much except their own basic needs, so we are loved deeply and personally by You even as we only little by little come to understand the depth of what Your love for us is and what it does for us.

See what great love
the Father has
lavished on us,
that we should be
called children of God!
And that is what we are!
1 John 3:1

As John the Baptist recognize how wonderful You are, God, I pray that we too would see You and see ourselves in proper relationship with You.  We keep pushing ourselves and our needs forward, thinking that things will get better for us when we have what we think we need.  In fact, we will only experience true satisfaction when we make You and Your agenda greater every day with our time and attention.

John testified about him
when he shouted
to the crowds,
“This is the one
I was talking about
when I said,
‘Someone is coming
after me who is
far greater than I am,
for he existed
long before me.’”
John 1:15

So Lord, forgive us for our self-centeredness and for having ambitions for things that don’t prioritize You.  You are far greater than we are and yet You fill us with Yourself so we can become so much more than we ever thought we could be.  Help us in our conversations with others to give proper recognition to the fact that You are doing so much for us every day.  Help us today to honour You, to welcome You to what is going on in our world, to do everything we can to lift up Your name and make Your fame known locally and across the earth.

From his abundance we have all received
one gracious blessing after another.
John 1:16

For the law was given through Moses,
but God’s unfailing love and faithfulness
came through Jesus Christ.
No one has ever seen God.
But the unique One, who is himself God,
is near to the Father’s heart.
He has revealed God to us.
John 1:17-18

Thank You for filling our lives with one gracious blessing after another.  Thank you Jesus for showing us who God is – a God of unfailing love and faithfulness.  Draw us close to the Father’s heart as well we pray.  In Jesus’ name.  Amen
