PRAYER FOR THOSE FEELING HELPLESS

Suicide statistics trouble me.  I know the darkness that can enter a person’s soul and make you think there’s no way forward in this life and the only way to stop the pain is the suicide route.  I’ve been there myself.

During those dark moments we often question ourselves:

Do I matter?  Does anyone notice me?  Does anyone care?  These are questions that individuals who’ve struggled with hardship and pain have asked for centuries.  The longer we have struggled the more times we’ve sat at a point of not knowing where to turn, the harder it is to have hope.

Many folks are struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts as they experience long weeks at home, financial crisis, and uncertainty with the future.  We’ve spoken about this issue before but as we notice COVID-19 infection rates go up in a number of places and the thought of a second wave extending the already long months of a strange life in this season of the pandemic, it’s good to offer our prayers once again not only for ourselves but also in support on behalf of those who struggle.

The good news we base our prayer around today is that as long as we are living and breathing, there is hope for us today.  God is inviting us to a new way life with Him.  God says that if we come to Him, he will make a way of escape for us, no matter what we are facing – both things within our control and things beyond our control. We can’t change the choices of others, but our caring and loving God wants to show us and take our hand to guide us forward in a life that has everything we need.

Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously,
and he will give you everything you need.
Matthew 6:33

The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?
Hebrews 13:6

Jesus said: Come to me, all of you who are weary
and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Matthew 11:28

Loving God.  We’re coming to you today for help and saving for ourselves and those who are struggling today.  You’ve told us:

Let all the world look to me for salvation!
For I am God; there is no other.
Isaiah 45:22

And so that’s exactly what we are doing. You are God.  You have created us.  You’ve given us life.  You are the one who sustains our life.

Today we will live as best we can on the basis of Your word and Your promise that when we:

I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
Psalm 119:11

We may not be able to change a lot of things in our circumstances today but we can fill our hearts and minds with Your truth and allow that to give us comfort and hope and strength to face today’s challenges, one day at a time, one moment at a time.

Whatever new perspectives we need, we ask You to bring them to the front of our consciousness.  Holy Spirit, renew our thoughts and attitudes, we pray.

Let the Spirit renew your thoughts and attitudes.
Ephesians 3:23

We feel weak and vulnerable but in the power of Your Holy Spirit we will strive for full restoration of our thoughts and emotions, even the desire for life.

Finally, brothers and sisters, rejoice! Strive for full restoration,
encourage one another, be of one mind, live in peace.
And the God of love and peace will be with you.
2 Corinthians 13:11

Today, we choose to give You way a chance.  We will do  our best to remember, with You, God, nothing is impossible. Please give us hope and strength to live according to Your Word. Help us to take all the practical steps available to make room for hope in our hearts and minds.  Amen

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
and all that is within me,
bless His holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all His benefits:
Who forgives all your iniquities,
who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from destruction,
who crowns you with lovingkindness
and tender mercies,
who satisfies your mouth with good things.
Psalm 103:1-5a

I don’t know how You or someone You love feels challenged today but I can tell you from personal experience that there is more life than what you think at this moment if you are in a dark place.  It’s not hopeless for you.  Pray for understanding, comfort and strength.  Reach out for help.  Share with others what is going on.  Call a help line if you don’t know any other place to start.  I may not know your name but I will be praying for you as you do all you can to find the help you need today.
