Rising Above the Shame Of Abusive Experiences
The power of another person’s abusive words or actions is not stronger than the power of God’s love. Even though feelings of shame are some of the most powerful we experience, God’s love goes deeper and is able to lift us above it all.
The first truth we need to receive from God and affirm to ourselves is that we are not defective and dirty because of the evil one’s influence on someone else to sin against us.
Satan will do everything in his power to keep us obsessing on the abusive act we experienced, and the feelings of hopelessness associated with it. God’s plan for our restoration is based on the truth of who He says we are. God says we are precious in His sight.
Others were given in exchange for you. I traded their lives for yours because you are precious to me. You are honored, and I love you. Isaiah 43:4
God gave us Jesus so we could live a blessed life, filled with joy. When Jesus died on the cross He did so as one shamed by his peers, naked, scorned, and without dignity. We mean so much to God and God so longs for an eternal life of loving relationship for us with Him that He went this extreme distance to make a way for us to receive this new life.
No matter what has gone on before, all God’s promises are YES for us who belong to Jesus.
Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water. Hebrews 10:22
Anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun! 2 Corinthians 5:17
It is not easy to let go of powerful lies that have hindered our well-being for much of our lives, but God will give us the power to do so if we will follow His instructions and act on His word.
Wise counsellors can help us understand who’s responsible for what took place in our past and give us advice on how to speak the truth to ourselves which will hopefully reorganize our thinking around what is true.
Loving God, today we choose to intentionally turn away from all abusive words and acts done to us in the past. This is part of what we are doing when we put our will and our life into Your care.
When memories trigger shame in us please remind us that we are washed clean by the blood of Jesus and that evil has no power over us. We are Your beloved sons and daughters with hope and a future.
Our new life of dignity and acceptance is a gift from You that no one can take from us. Help us today to focus on loving truth rather than memories of abuse in the past. When we like running or isolating, please strengthen us to remain and seek out healthy people with whom we can be honest about my feelings. Amen
Welcome to God’s house where love and dignity rule and reign.
