Friday November 23, 2012

Does our happiness depend on everything in our life being just right?  For many of us, if we observe how we perceive life on a daily basis, the answer is yes.  However, the truth is, if we think we can't be happy until all our circumstances are right, we will never be happy. Everyone experiences times of frustration and distress over unfulfilled hopes and dreams. When things don't go according to our plans, it is normal to feel disappointment. But we must be careful how we deal with that feeling, because if we remain in a state of disappointment for too long, it can turn into discouragement, despair, and finally depression.

Weeping may last through the night, but joy comes with the morning. (Psalm 30:5 NLT)

Under normal circumstances we can get tired and emotionally drained.  Things may make us feel sad temporarily, but we must not stay sad. Just as we cannot afford to stay mad for very long, neither can we afford to stay sad for very long. If we do, Satan will take advantage of the open door and push his way further into our lives, bringing more serious problems with him.

Satan, the ultimate liar, tries to use anything for evil, including normal “down times”.  Low energy and feeling tired emotionally may indicate the need for rest and renewal.  At vulnerable times, and in whatever way he can, Satan seeks to fill our minds with negative thoughts and emotions.   He is a discourager.  He is the giver of despair and his aim is to pull us down, put us down, and keep us down.

But Jesus is our encourager.  Jesus came to set us free from the evil powers of darkness. Jesus came to give us righteousness, peace, and joy.  His everlasting arms are ever upholding us, particularly when our circumstances are challenging.

I took you from the ends of the earth, from its farthest corners I called you.  I said, ‘You are my servant’; I have chosen you and have not rejected you.  So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.  I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isaiah 41:9-10 NLT)

But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who holds my head high.  (Psalm 3:3 NLT)
