Dig Deep

Jesus told a familiar story: But why do you call Me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do the things which I say?  Whoever comes to Me, and hears My sayings and does them, I will show you whom he is like:  He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently against that house, and could not shake it, for it was founded on the rock.  But he who heard and did nothing is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream beat vehemently; and immediately it fell.  And the ruin of that house was great.”  (Luke 6:46-49)

Jesus carefully sought out and then did the Father's will.  Over and over again we read how Jesus consulted with his Father.   Jesus prayed at His baptism and as He began His public ministry.  He prayed when He was well known and crowds followed Him everywhere.  He prayed when they were trying to trick him.  He prayed to give thanks. He spent whole nights praying.  He prayed before He chose the 12 disciples.  He prayed for Peter when Peter struggled.  He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane before He was killed. He prayed on the cross.   It’s important to note, however, that Jesus not only prayed about everything but He also DID what His Father guided him to do.  That’s why Jesus could tell the story of the house built on rock and on sand with such authority.  Hearing from God and doing what He says helps one build a solid foundation from which one will live life to the fullest, regardless of circumstances.  It’s the truth.  It’s the truth because Jesus is truth.  It’s also the truth that Jesus lived as a man here on the earth.

What a wonderful invitation Jesus gives to us when He invites us to come close to Him, learn His ways, and actually have the joy of following Him. When we choose the ways of God, we discover that life is not only secure but also satisfying.  Putting Jesus’ teaching into practice not only helps us face storms but gives us confidence to be strong even in the midst of turbulent circumstances.

We can’t wait until the storm is raging if we want to live safely and securely.  Day by day we need to dig deeply into God’s word and let God’s word grow deeper and deeper into our hearts.  Moment by moment as we share our lives with God, His direction and uplifting encouragement will settle us, because we will know by so many personal experiences how faithful God’s love for us really is.  That’s the sure foundation we’ll stand on when storms come and troubles surround us.  Let’s DIG DEEP today and enjoy this wonderful life we’ve been given.
