53 Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you. 54 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day. 55 For my flesh is real food and my blood is real drink. 56 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in them. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven. Your ancestors ate manna and died, but whoever feeds on this bread will live forever.” (John 6:53-58 NIV)
How to start a riot? Vancouver Canucks lost a hockey game and small minded people with too many substances in their systems wreaked havoc on the streets of Vancouver. Jesus spoke a simple truth and those who had their own perspective were stirred up to kill -- amazingly, their action to kill brought about the very fulfillment of these words Jesus spoke. They disagreed angrily with Jesus over these words. Others simply walked away and left Him because they found this hard to understand and receive. They didn't know what to do with Jesus.
On the night before He died, Jesus sat at dinner with His friends and reminded them, with bread and wine, that He would give Himself in ultimate service and sacrifice with the breaking of His body and the pouring out of His precious blood. Twenty four hours later this would be accomplished.
What will we do with this Jesus who suffered and died for us? Will we disagree with what happened on the cross with angry rejection or will we simply walk away from the story as soon as the Easter celebration is done, thinking that it was a nice thing that Jesus did but too hard for me to follow Him into the life He invites me to as His disciple. What do I do with a broken body and blood outpoured? Is the life of Jesus food and drink for my soul or an offense to my self-sufficient soul? Jesus invites us again today to feed on Him and live forever.
