Adjusting My Eyes To Bright Light
Wednesday August 28, 2013

Every day God has good instruction for us to enable us to walk in the light and truly leave the darkness of sinful behaviour behind. This is good news, particularly for those of us who are learning how to live in the light after walking for many years under the cover of darkness. When we turn our lives over to the care of God and follow His guidance, He promises to lead us forward safely.

You will open eyes that can’t see. You will set prisoners free. Those who sit in darkness will come out of their cells. I will lead them along paths they had not known before. I will guide them on roads they are not familiar with. I will turn the darkness into light as they travel. I will make the rough places smooth. Those are the things I will do. I will not desert my people. (Isaiah 42:7, 16 NIRV)

Anyone leaving a darkened room and entering into a lighted area knows how blinding the light can be. It can seem painful and certainly limits our ability to see how to go forward. The same holds true during that time just before dusk when a person is moving in and out of shifting shadows. It takes care to recognize objects or people in front of us and to see how to proceed safely. The light isn't bad, and light actually helps us see things much more clearly. However, when we come out of the shadows, it takes time for our eyes to adjust.

We need to rely on God's promises and God's help in this new lighted environment because this new life is unfamiliar to us. The same God who has set us free from the prison of our dark and sinful past promises to be with us as we go forward. God gives us clear guidance in His word, the Bible. The Holy Spirit lives within us and promises to bring us into all truth. As we get to know God more, and adjust to His ways, we will notice that our way forward appears clearer. We will be able to enjoy the many good things around us and experience the beautiful life God plans to share with us on a daily basis.
Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path. (Psalm 119:105 NLT)

When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own but will tell you what he has heard. He will tell you about the future. (John 16:13 NLT)
