Going To Prepare A Place

Tuesday August 20, 2013

Have you ever excitedly prepared a place for someone you love to come and stay with you?  There is usually a time planned for them to arrive and maybe you even go to meet them at the airport or bus or train station.  When Jesus was preparing His disciples for His departure He told them that He was going to prepare a place for them and that He would come and meet them so that they could be with Him.

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.  In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  And where I go you know, and the way you know.” (John 14:1-4 NKJV)

The disciples were confused when Jesus told them He was going away to prepare a place for them and especially when He said that they knew the way to get there.  Thomas, one of the disciples, questioned Jesus about what He had said . Thomas did not understand where Jesus was going and therefore he believed there was no possibility He could know the way.  That’s like telling a friend who has no knowledge of the city where you live that you are going to a certain place to prepare for them and that they already know the way to that place.  The friend, like Thomas the disciple, would start to question you as to how they would know the place you were going to and the way to get there.

Jesus said to him, (Thomas) “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." (John 14:6 NKJV)

Jesus told Thomas that He, Jesus, was the only way to get to this place He was telling them about.  If your friend wanted to meet you at the place in the town where you said you were going, they would have to trust the directions you gave them or follow a map of the area.  The Bible is similar to a map.   If you follow the directions given in the Bible you will get to the place where Jesus already is.

There is no other way to the Father in heaven except through Jesus.  Prior to this encounter with the disciples Jesus had already shared with them the way to the Father.  That is why Jesus said that they knew the way.

Jesus answered, “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”    “For my Father’s will is that everyone who looks to the Son and believes in him shall have eternal life, and I will raise them up at the last day”.  (John 6:29; 40 NIV)
