A Wonderful Harvest
Tuesday November 5, 2013

Whoever sows to please their flesh, from the flesh will reap destruction; whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. Galatians 6:8-10 (NIV)

Planting a garden, tilling the soil, watering the plants during hot summer days, weeding row after row of fruit and vegetables, and even bending over to harvest – this is all hard work. However, just as the Bible says, if we do not give up when we are weary but complete the task at hand, we will reap a wonderful harvest.

As a young child I didn’t enjoy having to complete my gardening responsibilities before I could go and play. Those rows of beans and potatoes and corn, lettuce, radishes, and beets looked endless to a young girl. The weeds loved to grow plentifully so even if you weeded one week, you’d still have work to do the next. However, when the end of the summer came, it was wonderful to go out to the garden and pick things like green peas, crack open the pods and pop those lovely fresh peas in my mouth.
Growing relationships well is hard work too. We need to spend time communicating, getting to know one another, learning to make space for each other’s perspective, letting momentary difficulties go, forgiving broken promises, serving and blessing, even though we may sometimes be tired of the same old stuff resurfacing.

We have a choice about the kind of relationships we will develop in our life. When we generously give forgiveness and compassion, we will know peace and joy and satisfaction ourselves. When we plant unforgiveness and resentment in our relationships we can expect harshness and bitterness to grow in us. What we plant, we will harvest.
Let’s not give up doing good to one another, serving God from a grateful heart, and trusting that we will reap a harvest of goodness and blessing.
