Perseverance And Winning
Wednesday February 12, 2014

Babe Ruth is perhaps the most famous baseball player of all time. He hit many home runs. His lifetime batting average was .342. That seems a remarkable number when you compare it to other players. The truth is, even though Babe Ruth was the greatest, 2 out of 3 times he tried to hit the ball, he struck out. He had failure more times than he had success and yet he was the most successful player of his time. Babe Ruth didn't let his strike-outs keep him from going up to the plate and batting again. He shrugged off bad games, missing a pitch he should have hit, hitting a fly ball, or striking out.

Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. (Hebrews 12:1 NIV)
We may not have a crowd of 20,000 fans watching and cheering us like Babe Ruth did each time he came to bat but, we do have friends and family and co-workers who see us every day. Our family and friends will face problems and so will we. They've heard us say that we are following Jesus and they are wondering what difference Jesus makes in our life when troubles come. Jesus offers us comfort and strength and help to face each problem. He has overcome the world and through Him we also become overcomers.

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. (John 16:33 NL)
God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble. The Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world. (Psalm 46:1, 1 John 4:4 NLT)
Babe Ruth stepped up to the plate after many failures. Regardless of how many times we've failed or fallen, God invites us to return to the life He has planned for us and trust Him to help us live it well. In his career Babe Ruth hit many home runs. The Holy Spirit living in us will help us live life in such a successful way that God will get great glory.
In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father. (Matthew 5:16 NLT)
