Calling 911 Or What?

Calling 911 Or What?

What would we think of an individual who was excitedly running up and down the streets of our neighbourhood telling us to come and see a man who was revealing all the details of our failings and sins?  We’d probably be hitting the 911 buttons on our phones as quickly as we could so the paramedics could come and help this poor soul out.

That’s why it’s so amazing that a woman who had just met Jesus did that.  In her conversation with Jesus he’d helped her own up to the fact that she had a pretty promiscuous past.  Others in the community knew some details about her life and were ridiculing her and avoiding her because of it.  She was doing her daily errands at a time when no one else was around because of the shameful reputation she had in the community.

Suddenly, without fear or shame, and with real excitement, this woman is running through the town and trying her best to gather as many people as she can.  John tells it in these words:  The woman left her water jar and ran back into town. She said to the people, “Come and see a man who told me everything I have ever done! Could he be the Messiah?”  Everyone in town went out to see Jesus.  (John 4:28-30 CEV)

Many of us carry dark and shameful hidden secrets that we are afraid to admit to ourselves let alone let others know we are guilty of them.  It’s pretty amazing, and definitely true, that the one place where we can reveal these secrets safely and find healing and forgiveness is in the presence of Jesus Christ.  Just like this woman, if we dare to meet with God in truth, we will find a new life that is amazingly beyond all we could hope for.  We will find ourselves unable to keep from celebrating it with others.

"Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sins are put out of sight. (Romans 4:7 NLT)

Jesus is ready to meet with us today, just as he was ready to meet with this woman.  He offers us forgiveness and a new life that is filled with joy and will satisfy us completely.  What will we do today?  Hide in shame or live in joyful celebration of Gods’ gift of forgiveness and healing?
