Three Wishes (1)

What do you really want from life?  What if God was to give you three wishes and no more what would they be? Let your mind dwell on that for a few moments.

For day after day they seek me out; they seem eager to know my ways, as if they were a nation that does what is right and has not forsaken the commands of its God.  They ask me for just decisions and seem eager for God to come near them.  (Isaiah 58:2 NIV)

There is a funny story about three shipwrecked sailors who were stranded on a desert island. One was an American, and one was a Canadian and the other was an Irish man.  After many months of being marooned on the island they found an old lamp while they were walking along the beach.  When they removed the lid from the lamp there was a great whoosh and a genie appeared before them.  “Now,” said the genie, “For setting me free I will grant you three wishes, one for each of you.”  The American thought for a moment and then said he would like to be in New York with a million dollars in his pocket. “Granted” said the genie and whoosh, the American was gone.  After some thought the Canadian said he would like to be in Vancouver with two million dollars in his pocket. “Granted” said the genie and whoosh, the Canadian was gone.  The Irish man continued to think for a bit and then said to the genie “I wish my two friends were back here with me so they could help me decide what I should ask for”.  Smile!

The question today is “What do you really want from life”?  What are your deepest longings, your deepest desires?  The fact is that God looks at our desires more than He looks at our decisions.  You see desire is much deeper than decision.  In certain situations we may make decisions to do that which we deem to be palatable or achievable.  Our decision may not be the desire of our hearts but we make do with it because we do not trust God with the impossible.

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”  (Matthew 17:20 NLT)

God says in Psalm 37:4 (NIV), Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Why not get to know and delight yourself in the God who loves you unconditionally?  It may be that the deepest desires of your heart are included in the plans He has for you.
