Life Without God (3) Discovering Truth

Wednesday September 3, 2014

If we hold something in our hand and let go of it, it will drop to the ground.  It doesn’t matter if it is large or small, light or heavy, it will drop to the ground.  Why?  The law of gravity on earth is in operation.

Has the law of gravity always been around? Yes, a scientist named Sir Isaac Newton first determined the force that attracts one thing to another and then in 1905 was able to more accurately help us understand it through his theory of relativity. Much of modern science in physics and aerodynamics is based on these principles. Sir Isaac Newton  and Albert Einstein didn’t invent gravity but we learned a lot about it from them.  It had always been there, we just didn’t understand it.

For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God.  (Romans 1:20 NLT)

In the early 1500’s Nicolaus Copernicus made some very controversial statements.  He said that the sun didn’t revolve around the earth, but that the earth revolved the sun.  Well, today, with modern science and satellites and space ships, we all know that, in fact, the earth revolves around the sun.  The earth and sun didn’t change positions and orbits in the 1500’s. They went on doing just what they had always been doing.  Now , thanks to Copernicus we just know the truth.

The heavens proclaim the glory of God.  The skies display his craftsmanship.  (Psalm 19:1)

When I look at the night sky and see the work of your fingers—the moon and the stars you set in place—what are mere mortals that you should think about them, human beings that you should care for them?  (Psalm 8:3-4 NLT)

The more science learns, the more it underscores the intelligent creation and amazing care of a loving creator.  Today is a good day to celebrate and ponder this amazing truth.
