Victory Over Depression (4)

Thursday July 16, 2015

We can't control all our circumstances, but we don't have to let what happens around us spoil our day.  We can let go of the situations that cause discouragement and turn our hearts and minds towards the promised provisions of God to meet our need.  This is a process stated in the Bible as follows: “we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV)

Many people are depressed because they think they can’t face truth.  However, the God who came to fill our lives with joy is the same God who came to reveal truth and to give us strength to face whatever that truth is. Avoiding and blaming give the devil’s lie a chance to flourish in our hearts. This lie says, “Living with the truth will be more painful than concealing it.”  We will overcome depression when we quit making excuses and stop blaming everyone and everything else for how we feel.  Bad things happen to all of us at various times in our lives.  God has prepared a way forward for us no matter what has previously taken place in our lives.  No harm or injustice is bigger than God’s ability to help and heal.  God is able to use all things for good – even those things whereby the devil or others caused harm to us.

We are not stuck. We are not damaged for life.  We are not broken beyond repair.  God is offering us new life today if we will look to Him rather than to past events.  If we seek Him, He will fill us with the joyful life He’s prepared for us today.

Am I in the place of God?  You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. (Genesis 50:19b-20 NIV)

When we acknowledge truth and repent for our incorrect beliefs, God will forgive us and help us to enter into the joy of His salvation.  Better yet, he will even use us to help someone else who may be walking along the same path.

“I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness; I will take hold of your hand. I will keep you and will make you to be a covenant for the people and a light for the Gentiles, to open eyes that are blind, to free captives from prison and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness. (Isaiah 42:6-7)
