Honouring Those With Whom We Have Personal Relationships:

Wednesday September 9, 2015

When we believe that God is real and loves us with an all-encompassing love, our belief will be reflected in our behaviour.  As we receive the love that God pours out on us, we will mirror that love in a lifestyle that honours others.

For example, the honour we are to give to our parents is not based on their parenting skills but on their position of authority over us.  When we are married we are told to honour our spouse and to keep the marriage bed pure.  God knows that adultery and sexual immorality harms our body and our relationship. His desire is that we fulfill our commitment to our spouse so that the purity of our union of body and soul is preserved.  With regards to others, we are instructed to love one another and to honour others above ourselves.  Integrity in these disciplines will be achieved when we respect ourselves as children of our Heavenly Father who loves us and lavishes the riches of His grace upon each one of us.

Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.  Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves.  (Exodus 20:12; Hebrews 13:4; Romans 12:10 NIV)

Through the earthly life of His son and their relationship, God demonstrated how individuals are meant to relate honourably toward one another.  Jesus respected, consulted, and was obedient to His father in everything he did.  Even on the cross Jesus entrusted His life to His Father and honoured Him by being obedient unto death.   Jesus gave His life for friends and foes so that those who believe on Him would not perish but have everlasting life.

I can do nothing on my own. I judge as God tells me. Therefore, my judgment is just, because I carry out the will of the one who sent me, not my own will. Then Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands!” And with those words he breathed his last.   (John 5:30, Luke 23:46 NLT)
