17 Be good to your servant, that I may live and obey your word.
18 Open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in your instructions.
19 I am only a foreigner in the land. Don’t hide your commands from me!

20 I am always overwhelmed with a desire for your regulations.
21 You rebuke the arrogant; those who wander from your commands are cursed.
22 Don’t let them scorn and insult me, for I have obeyed your laws.
23 Even princes sit and speak against me, but I will meditate on your decrees.
24 Your laws please me; they give me wise advice.
(Psalm 119:17-24 NLT)

Life with God in recovery is like a journey in an unknown land.  We don’t know the road.  We don’t know the rules and the customs of the area.  We’re not sure what’s expected nor do we understand why some people respond as they do.  We are travelers who need the map God provides.  We also need to listen attentively to the helpful voice on the GPS device which gives us directions one turn at a time.

Day by day as we ask God to speak to us and look at God’s word we find truths that look wonderful.  We long to see the good promises of God come alive in our daily living.  We often experience joy and pleasure as we begin to take God at His word and find Him faithful to what He has written for us in the Bible.

Sometimes what we read seems so amazing that we find it hard to believe it could be true.  At other times our old familiar way of understanding life and doing things seems more convenient than following God’s commands and we stray from God’s path.  It’s not long before trouble overtakes us and we learn again the painful consequences of trying to live life on our own terms.

Even though our journey in this unknown land of recovery has some twists and turns in the road, it’s wonderful to experience the voice of God, just like the GPS voice, telling us how to turn around and correct our course so we can safely get to our destination.
