Worthless Or Prized Possessions?

Wednesday March 9, 2016

So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters.  Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens.  He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.   He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession.  (James 1:16-18 NLT)

As children of God we are His prized possession.  Why then do some of us feel worthless?  We tell ourselves over and over again that no one really knows us, cares about us, or loves us?  We feel insignificant and agree with some of our critics that we contribute nothing of value to society. We have chosen to believe our own critical thinking and, through our addictive behaviour, sought to relieve the pain it brought us.  Who is to blame for our delinquent thinking?

I have stretched out My hands all day long to a rebellious people, who walk in a way that is not good, according to their own thoughts.  (Isaiah 65:2 NKJV)

What we say about ourselves and others is not what God says.  To live well in recovery, we need to take authority over every lying thought in our heads and line it up with the truth of scripture.   When we allow our fears or feelings of anxiety to dictate to our brains, we end up with unreasonable thinking.  When we allow God’s truth to inform our brains, we end up with hopeful thoughts.  We need to make a choice.  Will we allow our fears and feelings to determine our thoughts and actions or the truth of God’s word?

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.  (2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV)

Let’s begin today by telling ourselves that we are not worthless but are priceless masterpieces whom God chose to give birth to, set his seal of ownership on, and fill with his Spirit.

Jesus prayed, Make them holy by your truth; teach them your word, which is truth.  (John 17:17 NLT)
